An IR sensor array for line following is a compact module consisting of several infrared transmitter–receiver pairs arranged in a straight line. Each pair detects the reflectivity of the surface beneath it—dark lines absorb IR light while light surfaces reflect it. The array outputs digital or analog signals corresponding to surface contrast, enabling microcontrollers or motor drivers to precisely determine the robot’s position relative to the path.
This sensor array supports quick response times, stable readings, and reliable performance on various surfaces. It is widely used in robotics applications such as autonomous vehicles, maze solvers, path-following robots, and educational robotic platforms. Adjustable sensitivity (in some models) and onboard signal processing help maintain accuracy even in noisy environments.
